  1. Residents of Hoofank Corners were stunned by the torching, late last night, of the town's only tree. The tree was
  2. a Quercus formicadidii, var. flamabus hoofanki. The oak subspecies was named for the town when it was identified
  3. in 1937. The citizens, in a fit of civic pride, cut down all other trees in the town. An ordinance was passed at the
  4. same time which forbade the planting of any other species of tree, and plans were made to line city streets with
  5. seedlings from the single tree. Unfortunately, the tree proved completely sterile, and a statewide search failed to
  6. produce other specimens.

  9. Survivors include three grafts taken years ago by Ed Dumfrey (Clood County) to replace branches on his tree which
  10. were knocked off in the big wind of 1985. Contacted by telephone, Ed said that he "sure were real sad," and that
  11. he doesn't "know what'll happen if we has another big wind."

  14. Until burial next Tuesday, the town tree will lie in state at Hervies' Lumber Yard. Services will be held at Berherd's
  15. Funeral Home at 1:00 PM, followed by internment at Bea's Plant Cemetary.
